How to Get Others to Tell You the Truth?
In a 1:1 meeting with your colleague, have you felt like there’s something they’re not telling you openly?
“What are they hiding?” and “Why are they trying to fool me?” – the questions that are going around in your head and that you can’t deal with.
We offer you some practical advice on how to predispose a person to tell the truth:
Let’s start here: Why do people lie?
The answer is simple and lies in the natural fear of these 3:
1️⃣ Fear of Conflict
2️⃣ Fear of Getting the other Person in Trouble
3️⃣ Fear of not belonging
When we are aware of why we’re not telling the truth, we can move forward to:
How to get the other person to tell you the truth?
Follow these 2:
1️⃣ Give reason to the other person to tell the truth – tell them the advantages THEY will get by not lying:
People are interested in “What’s in it for me?”
2️⃣ Try to get rid of their fear. Especially, if you know the reason they fear telling the truth:
“Together we can solve the problem better and more effectively!”
You don’t have to become an expert of non-verbal communication or an expert in detecting fraud to understand what people are hiding from you.
Just act so that the other person doesn’t feel the need to lie to you!
